Read the route line
Open a route on the map and its line takes the color and pattern of the surface under it. Each surface has its own, so gravel, unpaved and cobbled sections stand out from the paved ones.
The colors show while you plan. Once you start navigating, the map shows the usual route line.
Open the Surface key
- Tap Surface at the top right of the map. After a few seconds it shrinks to a short line, which you can tap too.
- Read how far the route runs on each surface it has, such as Paved, Likely paved, Gravel, Unpaved and Cobblestone.
- Tap Turn off surface colors if you want a plain line. Turn them on again in Map options.
See the surface along the profile
- Tap the route's name at the bottom of the screen to open its details.
- Look under Elevation and surface.
A bar under the elevation profile shows each surface where it falls along the route, and the legend gives each one's share in percent. You can see whether the gravel comes on a climb, a descent or the flat.
Where the surface comes from
Surfaces come from OpenStreetMap, so they are only as good as the local mapping. Where nobody has mapped the surface of a stretch, the app shows it as Unknown. Treat a short gravel or cobbled stretch as a lead, and check it if it decides which bike or tyres you take.
