How much pressure for gravel?

Gravel is where tyre pressure matters most, and where the number printed on the sidewall helps you least. Run it too hard and the tyre skips across washboard, corners vaguely on loose surfaces, and beats you up for hours. Run it too soft and you risk burping air in corners, denting rims, and squirming under power. The sweet spot is a surprisingly narrow band, and it moves with your weight, your tyre width, and how loose the ground is.

This calculator sizes each tyre to compress by about 15% under the load it actually carries. Your front and rear wheels take different shares of your weight, so they get different pressures: matching the drop on both keeps the bike planted and predictable. It is the same engine that runs in the Route Companion app, tested against published tyre load-deflection data, and it deliberately errs a touch low, because on gravel a slightly soft tyre rolls faster and grips better than a hard one.

Common questions

What tyre pressure should I run on gravel?

It depends on rider weight, tyre width, and how loose the surface is. As an anchor, a 75 kg rider on 40 mm tubeless tyres runs roughly 30–34 psi on hardpack, and lower on loose or chunky gravel. Use the calculator for a number matched to your setup, then fine-tune ±2 psi over a few rides.

Should gravel pressure be lower with tubeless?

Yes, a little. Without a tube there is nothing to pinch-flat, so tubeless setups can safely run a few psi lower, which is much of why they corner and roll so well on rough ground. Pick your setup in the calculator and it adjusts.

How much lower for loose or chunky gravel?

Roughly 2 psi for loose-over-hard and 2–4 psi more for chunky or rocky terrain, versus a hardpack baseline. Lower pressure lets the tyre conform to the surface for grip, but go too far and you invite rim strikes and burping.

Does tyre width change the pressure a lot?

A lot. A wider tyre holds more air volume, so it needs less pressure for the same support: a 45 mm tyre runs noticeably lower than a 38 mm one at the same weight. Enter your real measured width, which is often 1–2 mm wider than the label on a modern rim.

Do hookless gravel rims limit pressure?

Yes. Hookless (straight-side) rims are capped at 72.5 psi (5 bar) per ETRTO guidance, and many combinations specify lower. On gravel you are usually well under that, but tick the hookless option and the calculator caps and warns you.
